A physician assistant or sometimes referred to as doctors assistant is a person who is allowed to practice medicine under a physicians supervision. Physician assistants should not be confused with medical assistants for the latter only do clerical and routine clinic tasks. You may be questioning the difference between a physician assistant from a doctor or a nurse practitioner. For doctors, they are licensed to perform patient care. A physician assistant perform duties under the supervision of a doctor and does not have a medical license. A nurse practitioner is a health professional that have studied advanced levels of nursing. What does a physician assistant do? According to the job description, you are an important member of the health care team. Based on your clinical experience, you are expected to carry out preventative, diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients as instructed by the doctor. For better job opportunities, you can choose to specialize in a certain field of interest. Some common specialties are pediatrics, family medicine, general internal medicine, surgery, orthopedics, geriatrics and emergency medicines. When you have a specialization, then you will be able to focus on a certain field and you will have a better chance of getting a better job.
