Before choosing a certain career, it is a must that you know what you are going to do for that job - the different tasks that you have to perform, who you will work with or in short, the job description. To anyone who wants to be a physician assistant, this is also an important thing that you have to do first before signing up for classes. Here are some important information that you should know about the physician assistant job description.

A physician assistant or sometimes referred to as doctors assistant is a person who is allowed to practice medicine under a physicians supervision. Physician assistants should not be confused with medical assistants for the latter only do clerical and routine clinic tasks. Recently, there have been numerous openings for physician assistant jobs and it is now one of the most common professions these days. Being one of the fastest growing jobs, more people are getting physician assistant degrees although only few of them are actually aware of what the job entails.

You may be questioning the difference between a physician assistant from a doctor or a nurse practitioner. For doctors, they are licensed to perform patient care. A physician assistant perform duties under the supervision of a doctor and does not have a medical license. A nurse practitioner is a health professional that have studied advanced levels of nursing. You are essential trained as a general practitioner responsible in the provision of patient care as a physician assistant.

What does a physician assistant do? According to the job description, you are an important member of the health care team. Based on your clinical experience, you are expected to carry out preventative, diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients as instructed by the doctor. You will be trained to perform tasks that a doctor routinely do such as diagnosing diseases, ordering laboratory tests, prescribing appropriate drugs and making referrals to specialists when deemed necessary. You are trained to have a general grasp of the various common health conditions to carry out all these tasks competently.

As mentioned earlier, a physician assistant works with the directions of a physician. But in areas where the doctor is available once or twice a week such as in rural areas and inner city clinics, the physician assistant will consult with his supervisor to address the health problems of the clients. House calls may be performed as well as visits to nursing homes and hospitals to check on certain patients and reports are made to the doctor afterwards.

For better job opportunities, you can choose to specialize in a certain field of interest. Some common specialties are pediatrics, family medicine, general internal medicine, surgery, orthopedics, geriatrics and emergency medicines. When you have a specialization, then you will be able to focus on a certain field and you will have a better chance of getting a better job.

The physician assistant job description is determined by the state law and the supervising physician whom you are going to work with.
