Health Facts About Acid Reflux

by Marsha Henway

Acid Reflux is a disease commonly known as GERD, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. When it comes to this kind of disease, the stomach's liquid content refluxes in the esophagus. Because of this liquid, damage and inflammation in the lining of your esophagus can be the result. The liquid that is refluxed contains pepsin and acid which is produced by the stomach. Pepsin is the enzyme which starts the digestion of the proteins found in our stomach. Also, bile that backs-up from the duodenum which attaches the small intestines to the stomach can be found in the regurgitated liquid. In acid reflux, acid is the most damaging ingredient.

Another way to define acid reflux is being a chronic condition and takes a lifetime to deal with. When there is injury to the lining of the esophagus, then chronic condition is achieved. The problems, as well as GERD, will then return if treatment is applied and is not continued.

Acid reflux can be destructive and our body has ways of protecting itself from such effects. Reflux usually occurs when a person is in a supine or laying down position because the refluxed liquid can freely flow back to the stomach.

If awake, a person swallows repeatedly whether there is reflux or not. Reflux liquid flows back into the stomach when a person swallows. Every time the person swallows, the saliva containing bicarbonate travels down to the esophagus because the salivary glands produce saliva containing bicarbonate. Acting as the neutralizer in the small amount of acid which is left in the esophagus is the bicarbonate.

As a matter of fact, the reflux of the stomach's liquid contents into the esophagus can occur in most standard individuals. Also according to one study, reflux can occur regularly in normal individuals as in patients who are diagnosed with GERD. However, the refluxed liquid contains more acid in patients with GERD and the acid remains in the esophagus for longer periods of time.

There are certain conditions which can make a person vulnerable to acid reflux. A person who has GERD can also have elevated hormone levels. It is advisable to seek medical advice from your doctor if you feel that you are suffering from GERD.
